The Challenge

I redesigned the student assignments area, where learners receive teacher-curated homework made up of exercises across multiple curriculum topics. The experience needed to do two things at once: increase motivation to practice and help students improve over time.

Just as important, it had to support differentiated learning. Students who struggled were often discouraged by assignments that felt too hard, while advanced students were under-challenged.

The Constraints

Motivation vs. Progress

The assignment list had to encourage consistent practice without turning exercises into a grind. We needed visible progress cues that felt rewarding but still grounded in learning.

Personalized Difficulty

Teachers needed a way to coach students by setting individual goals and levels. That meant the UI had to make different difficulty targets feel fair, not confusing.

Multi‑Device Use

Assignments were completed across classroom tablets and home smartphones, so the layout had to work cleanly on smaller screens without losing clarity.

Role & Approach

User Experience

  • Structured the homework list so students could scan topics and know what to do next
  • Surfaced individualized goals so learners understood why their tasks differed
  • Created a clear flow from assignment list to exercise start

Personalized Coaching

Teacher‑set goals ensured each student worked at the right level, reducing frustration for those who needed support and increasing challenge for advanced learners.

Motivation & Feedback

  • Introduced rewarding animations and a simple coin/star system
  • 1–3 coins indicated performance; a star celebrated error‑free completion
  • Balanced encouragement with meaningful signals of progress

Responsive Design

  • Optimized the layout for tablets used in class and smartphones at home
  • Simplified spacing and hierarchy for smaller screens without losing structure

Outcome & Impact

The redesign made assignments easier to understand and more engaging to complete across devices, while giving teachers a practical way to tailor difficulty.

Key outcomes:

  • Clearer assignment list that reduced confusion and increased start rates
  • Improved motivation through visible rewards and progression
  • Better fit across tablets and smartphones

Key Takeaways

  • Personalization is a motivation multiplier. The right difficulty keeps students engaged and progressing.
  • Small rewards drive big habits. Simple, consistent feedback created stronger practice routines.
  • Responsive clarity matters. A clean mobile layout is essential when learning happens at home.
